A concertgoer has discovered that a familiar advertising soundtrack continues for a considerable time after the point at which the car normally reaches the coastal bend.
Peter Wren recognised the melody immediately and settled back, waiting for the product. Instead, the orchestra developed an idea.
This development took several forms, some of which seemed quite far removed from the premium kitchen with which he had always associated the piece. He began to suspect that the music had interests of its own.
The programme confirmed that it had existed before the advertising campaign and had originally been intended for listeners rather than prospective customers.
Peter found this surprisingly moving. Without a price appearing at the crucial moment, he was free to experience a feeling he could not immediately convert into a purchase.
At the interval, he mentioned that the composer had done very well to produce something so recognisable. His companion suggested the recognition might have travelled in the opposite direction.
He is now interested in exploring further works by the same composer, particularly anything not yet associated with a comparison website.
The concert’s sponsor has welcomed his discovery of music’s independence, and would like him to know who made it possible.
